The building of a new cathedral- the most
exciting construction project in the world. Principal architect Antonio
Gaudi.
THE PORCH

THE TOWERS
Notice the evidence of demolition- much of the earlier work did not
pass muster. However, that is now history.

THE COLUMNS AND CEILING
Gaudi's great contribution to tall buildings in response to the older weak
walls; the tree columns with branches and, a flat ceiling,
that eliminates the horizontal thrust that required the use of buttresses
in the great cathedrals. This will be the tallest Cathedral in the
world, and encompass the most volume.

What an exciting day. Sue had to go back to Barcelona for more.
See Susan
Turpening's art work- she won the website in a competition.
Beautiful concrete work.
Looking across transept. Above the scaffolding will be the tall center
section.
.
Looking from street into transept. They seem to be aiming for services
in this corner soon.
MODERN CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY
When Linda and I visited in 1972 it was stone by stone. Now
they are re-inventing modern technology.
Drainage detail on porch.

Knuckle with branch casing piece being lowered by block and tackle.
Notice the incredible bundle of re-bar inside the casing.
They are leap-frogging. For every 5 meters of casing they get
an extra 5 meters with precast pieces. There are good engineers on
this job as well as artists. The workmanship is much better now than
earlier.
MODEL SHOP The building is built
in miniature first. Showing transept and skylight.

MORE IMAGES. There are
so many symbolic images that writers will spend lifetimes trying to explain
them.
